For those accustomed to Hellborg's work with the late, great Shawn Lane, or his Middle Eastern and Indian tinged work, or even just his John McLaughlin association, this album will sound like an anomaly. It is early Hellborg, and it sounds... kind of conventional. The general aesthetic is a jazz/funk/rock piece with sporadic vocals, synthesizers, and general sounds that betray the 1987 recording date. While engaging in some genre-hopping from track to track and giving hints of the greatness to come, Hellborg is often buried amid too many other musicians, and as we have learned, he is at his best with no more than minimal accompaniment. The accompanists here are hardly slouches-- they include Bernie Worrell and Ginger Baker! However, fans of Unseen Rain or Bernie's general weirdness probably won't find this one essential. Any time Jonas takes a solo, you get a Jonas Hellborg bass solo. You just have to wait for it. With Hellborg's other, later work, his bass is right up front, where it should be. An interesting relic, but hardly essential.
